Karla Linn Merrifield

Please Don’t Judge Me by My Lips

Astonishing this kiss, so seemingly posh
on its passage to and past India, truly posh:
portside-out-starboard-home posh;

a kiss of etymologically glimmering P.O.S.H,
of erstwhile British-Empire-prowess posh,
of Queen Mary 2’s nostalgic, refabricated posh;

this kiss smacks of a Princess-ish-posh,
up-in-“the-Grills’”-decks posh,
of cushy bathrobe and suite-orchids posh,

of intimate dining well-above-steerage posh,
artificially, stratifyingly, stiff-upper-lip posh—
But this kiss is only masquerading, masked as posh,

for beneath its pose as a trifling-frivolous posh,
it’s a kiss from my ever-iconoclastic heart: Posh…off.
